1 Reflection Reflection of Modern Popular Culture When registering for classes, I saw Modern Popular Culture and thought “hey, that sounds interesting”. I thought that we would be assigned movies to watch then required to write an essay on our interpretations. This class is much more than that. I have been awakened to view popular culture more thoroughly verses superficially as I have done all my life. Studying popular culture has altered my beliefs and values. Consequently, my alter values and beliefs will impact prospective decisions. During this course, we discussed personal identity, sexual identity, social class, and how media influences our daily lives indirectly as well as directly (Hotzman, 2014). Until reading Culture Jam, I considered myself to be strong minded, rejecting influences and expectations put on me by family, friends, and the media. I believed that I controlled what I aspired to achieve, wear, and act like. I have come to the realization that my vocabulary is not even my own. In every way cyber culture has influenced my idea of success, beauty, and fashion. It is so easy to be influenced by media, and the most unsettling part is that it occurs unbeknownst to the individual. From this point further I will question the decisions I make. I will ask myself “Am I being influenced by the cyber culture cult, or are theses my authentic desires?” RESOURCES Holtzman, L., Sharpe, L. (2014).
