SU Adult Novel Like Jesse Andrews Me and Earl and The Dying Girl Discussion
Warmup for the Homework:Before you start writing, read "Chapter Eight: 'As a Result.'" The focus of this chapter is "Connecting the Parts." It is looking at devices that create coherence between sentences within a paragraph (and between paragraphs). You will find the chapter presenting some common techniques that skilled writers use as they perfect drafts: Transitional terms (the text groups and lists them on pp. 105 & 106)Pointing words--pronouns that point back to a word, phrase, or sentence that has already been writtenRepetitionsRewording previous statements (synonyms or new phrasings for concepts already presented)These devices depend upon looking at what you have just written and adding one or more of these techniques to the sentence that you are now writing: ex) You write a sentence. Then you add connections backward in the next sentence.Description: Begin the fifth homework with the thesis that you are using for your second essay. It can be the thesis from your fourth homework, or it could be a revised version that responds to comments that your peers or I may have made. This will be an initial working thesis for the draft of your essay. Boldface this sentence and start it on the left-hand margin as if it were at the end of your introduction. Then write a paragraph that describes Bruno Bettelheim’s argument of how Fairy Tales contribute to the maturation of young children. You will be setting up the concepts that will then be applied to Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. You can draw from your earlier Reading Response on Bettelheim. It does not matter which of the two options you have chosen. They would both start from this action. Requirements: When you do this homework assignment, the final product should follow some basic guidelines of content and form:This journal response is limited to one double-spaced page. The response should include a sentence or sentences that provide a direct answer to one of my questions. That answer must start on the left-hand margin, and it must be in boldface. The response must then provide a paragraph of at least 100 words that summarizes Bruno Bettelheim’s description of the function of Fairy Tales in the development of young children. The sentences of this paragraph should be connected by at least one of the techniques presented in They Say/ I SayYour sentences should be clear and precise. If you use quotes, they must follow the 3-part structure discussed in They Say / I Say.
