Welcome to Week Seven, class! You did it! We are in our final week of class and this week, students will read Chapter 15: The Civil War, 1860-1865. In this final chapter, students will trace the events that led to secession by the Southern States and the creation and founding principles of the Confederacy. Students will trace the trajectory of this conflict and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of both sides until Union forces overpowered and claimed victory of the Confederacy.
Question 1-
What advantages did the North have at the beginning of the Civil War? Did the South have any advantages? What were they? What strategy did each side adopt in the attempt to use their advantages? How did Union strategy change in 1864, and what was the reasoning behind this new approach to the war? In what ways did the result of the election of 1864 decide the result of the war?
Question 2-
What was the Emancipation Proclamation? When was it put into effect, and by whom? What immediate impact did it have on the lives of the slaves? What political and military factors affected its timing? What was its impact on the conduct of the Civil war?
Question 3-
