Description
I'm not sure what to do with all these hydrocarbon chains. There are several problems, though I think if I can understand one, I can do the others. (I put spaces btwn molecules so it's easier for me to see)
CH3 CH2 COOH + CH3 OH = ?
CH3 CH2 CH2 CH2 COOH + H2N CH3 = ?
Explanation & Answer
1.When you react an alcohol ( CH3OH - methanol) with an organic acid ( CH3CH2COOH- propanoic acid), you get an ester. The ester takes its name first from the alcohol , methyl- and then from the acid - propanoate:
CH3OH + CH3CH2COOH → CH3OOCCH2CH3 + H2O
methanol reacts with propanoic acid to form methyl propanoate and water
2.
CH3 CH2 CH2 CH2 COOH + H2N CH3 = CH3-CH2-CH(CH3)-CH(NH2)-COOH
