Notes Marks will be deducted if you fail to draw upon appropriate professional and academic literature in your writing and if the assignment is not written and presented in a professional manner. You can quote other people’s work provided that you cite and reference them correctly in your reports. However, the majority of your reports should be your own ideas and thoughts written in your words. Your report must end with a section giving references – this will show where you got your source material from. Please use APA 6 referencing style. Part 1 This part of the assignment tests your knowledge of what is required to build a fully‐functioning computer system based on a set of requirements, and prompts you to research certain aspects of building a system. Imagine you work for a company that builds computers for clients. What information do you need to know? What will a client use the computer system for? Tasks 1 and 2 are for two different sample clients, each with their own requirements. Task 1: This client wants to have a complete gaming computer built that is capable of playing the games Crysis 3, Far Cry 4 and Grand Theft Auto 5 AT LEAST at the recommended settings. They want their computer and programs to start quickly, and have some form of data backup. They also want to ensure that they can upgrade their computer in the future to potentially run other games that are released. In addition to the main computer system, the client wants all peripherals, including (but not limited to) mouse, keyboard, monitor(s), and headphones or speaker system, each of which must be suitable for gaming. The client does NOT need any operating system software, or the games themselves. The client has a maximum budget of $3200, but wants to have the system quoted with the best price possible. Deliverables: - Create a spreadsheet or document listing all of the components, the store or website you could purchase, the cost of each component, and a brief explanation for the client of why you chose that component. Task 2: This client wants to have a complete computer system built that is suitable for home use. They want to use the computer to write documents, play music, watch movies, and browse the internet and other light tasks. They have a lot of family photos, and also a large collection of movies on hard drive. They want their computer and programs to start quickly, and have some form of data backup. The client needs to use the computer to connect to a wireless network. The client would also like to print their own photos. In addition to the main computer system, the client wants all peripherals, including (but not limited to) mouse, keyboard, monitor(s), printer, and headphones or speaker system. The client does NOT need any operating system software, or network router. The client has a maximum budget of $1700, but wants to have the system built with the best price possible. Deliverables: - Create a spreadsheet or document listing all of the components, the store or website you could purchase, the cost of each component, and a brief explanation for the client of why you chose that component. Important points/requirements: - Although you are building to a budget, don’t choose more expensive parts just because you have some allocated budget left over. However, some parts will need more money allocated to them. Either way, justify the choices you make in your explanation to the client. - Parts must be available in New Zealand, and in $NZ. I.e., not a part that can be shipped here from overseas. Use NZ stores or websites only. - Parts must be available at the time you search for them, for the quoted price. - Full details of each component must be provided. – i.e., “Intel Core i5 4670K Socket 1150”, NOT just “Intel i5 processor”. - Make sure your explanation to the client is clear, i.e., how can you justify choosing a $100 mouse over a $10 one? - ALL COMPONENTS MUST BE COMPATIBLE Useful resources: http://pricespy.co.nz – probably the best resource for this task. Gives a comprehensive list of components, with some helpful search options, and lists most of the specifications. Remember to check that the parts are available in New Zealand. http://www.tomshardware.com – provides a lot of practical information about parts. Essentially a large forum, and because of this you may encounter conflicting information. As such, be careful with your research, make sure it comes from a reputable source. Youtube – there are a number of helpful videos out there that will aid you in your research. Part 2 Task 1: Research the phrase “RAID Hard Drive Arrays”, and write a short report (several paragraphs, 300 words minimum) on what a “RAID Hard Drive” configuration is, giving a brief description of these 3 common RAID configurations: - RAID 0 RAID 1 RAID 10 Include in your report when and where these RAID configurations could be used, and include the advantages and disadvantages of each configuration. Task 2: Research “SLI – Scalable Link Interface”, and “AMD CrossfireX” in terms of graphics cards. Write a short report (several paragraphs, 300 words minimum) that covers what these terms mean, and where SLI or CrossfireX might be used in computing. Be sure to describing advantages and disadvantages. NOTE: These reports MUST be your own words. Simply quoting a webpage (even though you reference it) is not acceptable, and will result in a mark of zero for that part. You can draw on webpages as resources, but each resource MUST be referenced, and no copy/pasting will be accepted. This is closely monitored.
