This assignment is to be completed by Sunday. We are embarking on a study of personality and how it is shaped and defined. Consider the theories of Sigmund Freud (Schultz & Schultz, 2017, pp. 43-47, 51-57) and Carl Jung (Schultz & Schultz, 2017, pp. 86-96), who both focused their ideas surrounding personality on the primacy of unconscious forces in personality development. For this week’s assignment seek out an example from popular culture (which can include, but is not necessarily limited to, television, film, literature, and/or graphic novel/comic book) that illustrates one, or perhaps both, of their ideas in action. Then discuss the ways that the chosen media reflects these concepts. In other words, think about this: Which media, such as movies, television shows, books, or other writings are influenced by or are written about the theories of Sigmund Freud or Carl Jung? Once you have found an example, then think about, research, and describe in writing, how your choice reflects Jung and Freud's concepts. There are two important parts of this assignment. One is to be sure you understand Freud and Jung's concepts in our text. The other is to understand how this theory can be applied to the movie, book, or other resource you have chosen to research.

PSYC498 Week 2 Discussion
This week, we'll share our annotated bibliography progress a little! In the discussion, share your topic selection for the Annotated Bibliography assignment.Discuss the reasons you choose the topic you selected and whether you have encountered this topic in prior courses?Examine and explain how the topic is important to the larger field of psychology?Wrap up the weekly discussion by responding to three of your classmates posts and dialoguing with them about their selections for the assignment. Topic: the psychological impact of substance abuse on families and children. Classmate #1: Hello everyone, I hope you’re all having a great week so far! The topic that I chose to focus on for my annotated bibliography is adverse childhood experiences and how they influence potential substance and/or other mental illnesses later in life. To be honest, I chose this topic for personal reasons. My mother experienced many challenges in her life, even as a child, and she eventually turned to narcotics to help alleviate her stress and anxiety. After she separated from my father, she eventually found herself in an abusive relationship, which further fueled her struggle with addiction. She died last year from a drug overdose, and I eventually found an entry she wrote in her personal journal that outlined all of the challenges that she experienced early on in life. This made me realize that her struggle with drug addiction did not technically start in adolescence but was instead rooted in what she experienced during childhood. I took a couple of different childhood development courses during my time here at AMU, and much of the material I learned in these courses discussed the importance of our childhood experiences and how they shape our overall personalities as we grow into adulthood. There are also several studies out there that aim to shed even more light on the significance of childhood trauma. Many of these studies have found that adults who experience childhood trauma are usually more likely to experience mental disorders or develop substance abuse problems later in their adult lives (Kobulsky et al, 2018). Additionally, some studies also find that these adverse childhood experiences influence the ways in which children cope with stress. For example, some children who experience childhood trauma often decide to ignore or deny their stressors in an attempt to soothe themselves. This is called, “avoidant coping”, and is often a predictor of how poorly a child will be able to psychologically adjust to stressors later in life (Min et al, 2007). These coping mechanisms, along with other negative traits gained from adverse experiences, can also eventually be passed on to a child's future children, which can lead to a cycle of generational trauma. To sum everything up, our experiences in childhood help to shape who we are, and negative experiences in childhood can adversely influence our development and mental well-being throughout adolescence and even adulthood. For my annotated bibliography, I want to delve more deeply into this topic and find articles that will allow me and others to gain even more knowledge on this subject. Thanks for reading!References: Kobulsky, Yoon, S., Bright, C. L., Lee, G., & Nam, B. (2018). Gender‐Moderated Pathways From Childhood Abuse and Neglect to Late‐Adolescent Substance Use. Journal of Traumatic Stress, 31(5), 654–664. https://doi.org/10.1002/jts.22326 Min, Farkas, K., Minnes, S., & Singer, L. T. (2007). Impact of childhood abuse and neglect on substance abuse and psychological distress in adulthood. Journal of Traumatic Stress, 20(5), 833–844. https://doi.org/10.1002/jts.20250 Classmate #2:Hello All!"Mental health stigma" refers to societal prejudice and unfavorable perceptions discouraging people from seeking mental health support. This stigma exacerbates problems like military suicide and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Many service personnel refrain from seeking crucial mental health care due to this stigma, which frequently results from misconceptions and the worry of being stigmatized or judged by peers and superiors within the military community. Because of this, it is more challenging to treat and combat the alarmingly high rate of PTSD and the culture of quiet and concealment around mental health issues among military personnel. I chose the topic of the stigma of mental health treatment in the military because it is something that I have been dealing with for 15 years. My original unit has had 36 suicides since I left; I knew six personally. This topic has been generally addressed in a few courses I have been in but not directly studied through the coursework. I ultimately want to apply my degree to veteran mental health. As it addresses the prevalent cultural prejudices that discourage people from seeking essential mental health support, the subject of mental health stigma and help-seeking behavior is of utmost relevance to the study of psychology. This problem seriously affects access to care and psychological well-being, and it calls for research and interventions that not only lessen stigma but also promote policy reforms and culturally appropriate methods. It also highlights the need for global perspectives to address this complex issue. It highlights the difficulties that some populations, like veterans with PTSD, encounter, ultimately leading to better mental health outcomes and a more inclusive and equitable society.I may need to narrow my topic to a specific area of veteran PTSD/suicide to find studies that apply, but that is the starting point for now. Classmate #3:Hello Class,Hope everyone is well. Topic selection is always the hardest for me as I always want to choose the best one, but also with ample amount of information available. I have narrowed down my selection to stress and the impact it has on health and everyday functioning. It is something that everyone experiences and it is vital to explore and find ways that works best individually to have the balance.I have chosen to focus on stress as it's one of the main factors that we encounter everyday from different aspects like work, responsibilities, finances, managing the home, taking care of children, and much more. I have also had the topic of stress covered in several of my previous courses which has shown that it is a very common and serious matter that anyone and everyone can experience. “Stress symptoms may be affecting your health, even though you might not know it. You may blame sickness for that annoying headache, your sleeping troubles, feeling unwell or your lack of focus at work. But stress may really be the cause.” (MayoClinic, n,d).It is important to cover the topic of stress as it is a serious problem that can be realized and not realized as the symptoms are not always known, hence being able to spread awareness of it and how to manage and cope with it is vital to ensure a healthy and happy life. Even though stress does not fall under the mental health category, however it is connected which is why it also holds importance towards the field of psychology. “By causing mind–body changes, stress contributes directly to psychological and physiological disorder and disease and affects mental and physical health, reducing quality of life.” (APA, n,d).References:August 10th 2023, Stress symptoms: Effects on your body and behavior, mayoclinic.org,https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/stress-management/in-depth/stress-symptoms/art-20050987Stress, apa.org,https://www.apa.org/topics/stressThank you,Dagna
