Explanation & Answer

1.  Hitler's appointment as Chancellor of Germany in 1933; this paved the way for his seizure of total power (following the death of Hindenburg), and allowed him to move forward with his plans for rearmament and conquest.

2.  The Munich Conference of 1938; Britain, France, Italy, and Germany met to consider Hitler's demands for the annexation of Czechoslovakia.  Britain and France made no real effort to challenge Hitler's territorial ambitions, and caved in to his demands, with British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain proclaiming the agreement as "peace for our time"; as subsequent events proved, however, he was disastrously wrong.

3.  Hitler's invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941; despite having signed a non-aggression pact with the USSR, Hitler sent troops across the Soviet border, drawing the USSR into the European war, and forcing Stalin to join the Allies.  In the end, the Soviet Army played a major role in Hitler's defeat.
