Description

Have you noticed that if you leave a few things lying on a table, the table soon becomes a chaotic mess? Why does it become a mess? How does this example relate to entropy? Provide another real-life example that demonstrates this concept.

Explanation & Answer

Funny example. The second law of thermodynamics states that entropy of an isolated system will ALWAYS increase overtime. Entropy is directly associated to multiplicity of states, and what this means is a system with order will always become more disordered in time. Another example is bringing an ice cube to room temperature. The ice cube unergoes a phase change that increases the entropy as the molecules become less structured.
