Description
What are the exact steps of solving one unknown using addition and multiplication principles?
Thanks!
Example:
2(3x - 1) + 4x - 14
Explanation & Answer
This is what you do;
You evaluate what is enclosed in brackets first and any multiplication or division attached to it.
With the example above you values in the brackets by 2
2(3x-1) becomes
(2 x 3x) - (2 x 1)
=6x-2
Append the second part on the expression
6x-2+4x-14
Group like terms together
6x + 4x - 2 - 14
=10x -16
Therefore the simplest form of the expression is 10x -16
Note that If there is an equal sign at the end of the expression then you would move the -16 to the other side of the equal sign where it becomes 16 (Positive)
example
10x -16=4
Move -16 to the other side
10x=16 + 4
10x =20
Divide both sides by the coefficient of x
x=20/10
x=2
