Question description

Semantic ambiguity (i.e., sentence with multiple interpretations) is extremely notrious among computer scientists and considered one of the major challenges among major search engine enterprises such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing (Micro$oft). See below for an example of semantic ambiguity and read an article on ambguity at http://cs.nyu.edu/faculty/davise/ai/ambiguity.html.

  • The long drill was boring.
    • Interpretation 1: Exercises were long and made students bored.
    • Interpretation 2: A long tool is making a hole.

Discuss why you think it is such a major problem in computer science. Also, how do you think human beings know these two different interpretations? In other words, why does the first interpretation of the example above sound much more natural than the second interpretation?
