Los Angeles Mission College Epiphany in The Dead Essay
epiphany, noun
(1): a usually sudden manifestation or perception of the essential (Links to an external site.) nature or meaning of something
(2): an intuitive grasp of reality through something (such as an event) usually simple and striking
(3): an illuminating discovery, realization, or disclosure
In an essay of 4 pages explore how the concept of "epiphany" operates in the the short story "The Dead." Like many of the protagonists in Dubliners,Gabriel Conroy realizes something new about his life and grapples with the consequences of that insight: in the case of Conroy, he learns of the love a young man once had for his wife and the tragic end that befell that boy. The scene between Conroy and his wife back at the hotel is the the climax of the story, but I'd like you to examine what actions, moments, characters, and dialogue earlier in the story tell us about Conroy's character and the redundancy and even the boredom in his life. Exploring the short story in this way will help you understand how the earlier section of the story sets the stage for the climactic epiphany in the hotel room.

The student will begin an outline of the proposed problem/issue/project. The instructor will work
closely with the student to guide progress. The student will identify and discuss a set of

Practicum objectives must be measurable and evaluated at the end of each clinical day. If

that appropriate attention can be directed towards each. Typically, 2-3 objectives per practicum
day are adequate. A method for evaluation of individual objectives should be planned and
completed. An appropriate venue for presentation or implementation will be selected by the
preceptor.
c. Individual Practicum Project Presentation (5 points)
