Why is a body form made up of hyphae well adapted to the fungus mode of nutrition? (adaptation) Hint: Review the description of the fungal body on p. 2-3 of the lab manual. Hyphae grow throughout their food and have close contact over a large surface area for external digestion and absorption. Hyphae have a low surface to volume ratio so they are able to store more nutrients. Hyphae can easily branch and engulf their food by phagocytosis. Hyphae are able to grind up their food mechanically for absorption Fungus cell walls contain calcium carbonate which allows enzymes to pass easily out of the hyphae and small digested molecules to pass easily into the hyphae.
