Description
Have there been any previously held beliefs or customs in the sport of football and basketball that have been dismissed by scientific research?
Explanation & Answer
Thank you for the opportunity to help you with your question!
Yes it is true that scientific research has dismissed some held beliefs about football and basketball. An example of one of the beliefs is about the exercise of warming up. It is more likely from literature that static stretching decreases performance while dynamic stretching may increase performance, there is a discrepancy in the literature that static stretching does actually decrease performance. There has been a custom or belief in the past that stretching exercises in warm-up reduces DOMS and chance of injury however research has shown that stretching exercises decrease strength and power output and some authors have advised against it for predominantly strength and power activities.
