Arizona State University All Variables Case Study
Univariate Analysis Assignment 10 points For this assignment, please use the file titled Riverton
Youth Survey Univariate Output. This is a Word file with complete data analysis
output from SPSS. You will draw heavily on chapter 11 in the textbook. You will
also want to revisit the section of chapter 9 on level of measurement (pages
250-253). You may need to refer to the video tutorial for additional
info on the variables in the survey that will help you identify the level of
measurement being used. To complete the assignment, select three different variables
from this file measured at different levels (for example, one nominal, one
ordinal, and one ratio variable). For each variable describe in narrative form
the appropriate statistics that can be used to describe the data related to
this variable. Specify which measures of central tendency apply (mean, median,
mode) and list their values for your variable, which (if any) measures of
dispersion or variability apply (minimum value, maximum value, range, standard
deviation) and list their values for your variable. Be sure to explain your
reasoning. Note that the computer-generated output will give you a lot
of information that does not make sense given the level of measurement (for
instance, you would not report the mean for a nominal variable). You need to
sort through the output to decide what to use. Also, graphically present the data for the three variables
that you have chosen. You do not need to create graphs yourself; you can simply
copy and paste the graphs or charts from the output file in Word into your
paper (you do not need to provide a citation). You will need to sort through
the graphics in the output file and decide what to use, as it contains graphics
that are not appropriate for the given level of measurement (e.g., you would
not present a histogram for a nominal variable). Write a brief narrative for
each of your three variables explaining what the graphic depicts (e.g., “The
pie chart for X shows that…”) and why it is appropriate for this level of
measurement. Label your variable numerically, provide the descriptive
statistics of that variable, provide the graph, and provide the graph
narrative. Then move on to your second variable, do the same thing, and then to
your final variable. You do not need a title page, abstract, or other features
of a typical paper. Be sure to include your name and complete all sections of
the assignment.
