measuring distance between pop cans then changing them around gives different measurements

Question description

 you set a pop can on the floor upright and one on a shelf on it's side, measure from the top of the can on the floor to the top side of the can on the shelf.  You will get one number for the measure.  If you then put the can on the floor on it's side and set the can on the shelf upright and measure from the top side of the can on the floor to the top of the can on the shelf, you will get a different measurement.  Why?
