Hi Terry & Class,
Treatment for anxiety and stress related disorders include therapy and medications. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the most popular and commonly applied therapeutic approach. Applying this approach the person learns to identify what is creating the anxiety in order to change their thinking. CBT is a form of psychotherapy that developed out of the research of Aaron Beck. According to research conducted by Hoffman et al (2012) CBT is an effective treatment approach for all types of disorders including anxiety, psychotic disorders, depression and dysthymia, bipolar disorder, etc. the strongest support of CBT, however, was for anxiety and general stress (Hoffman et al, 2012). I support the use of CBT because it allows the person to understand what is causing the anxiety, depression, or stress and takes steps to address it. Bipolar related disorders are treated most commonly through medications such as mood stabilizers, antipsychotics, and antidepressants. Medications are paired with psychotherapy, such as CBT. Antidepressants are also used to treat depressive disorders.
