How does vocabulary development support content instructions for ELLs?
One of the greatest challenges in reading instructions for ELLs is vocabulary development. For students to read fluently as well as comprehend the written text, they have to use both the phonics and the context. When students do not have vocabulary, they can be able read completely phonetically but they will be unable comprehend whatever they have read. It is for this reason that vocabulary needs to be explicitly taught and made part of the curriculum just like learning and reading.
