Hi wmarchus,
First of all cloud services really came into existence with the introduction of the Windows 8 platform, however any time we save something or use the internet we are in the cloud. Companies such as Amazon.com,bell south, many of your telemarketer companies use the cloud because they constantly keep a running tab on thier customer base. For instance when you purchase a CD from amazon you can purchase the CD but as long as it has the auto-rip feature on it Amazon will download the music into your cloud player. Now there are several advantages to this. First of all when want to access the cloud it is available anywhere where the internet and wifi is available and so you have easy access to your document files.
Even when it comes to the Microsoft 2013 application suite you have the option now of saving your documents on the cloud or the "One Drive" as it is called and those documents can be retrieved but as with anything that is in the cloud there are always risk involved so security is always a concern but companies that use this approach have been very successful in saving and retrieving documents especially when you have huge amounts of documents and data that has to be retrieved.
