Nursing Problem Paper #1: Identifying the Problem
Identification of the Nursing Problem — Unit 4 (75 pts)
Compose a paper that describes the nursing problem that you have identified in
a clinical setting or have chosen from the simulated scenarios. The identified
problem can relate to patient and/or family care, staff or student problems, or
leadership and management problems, in inpatient or outpatient settings, or
other healthcare environments.
The evidence-based nursing problem paper, Identifying the Problem, is where
you will justify why this is an important problem; therefore, you need to supply
data and information that shows this is an important problem. You do this by
providing background information, statistical support, and specific information
about the identified problem. The paper should not be purely anecdotal
information from you or your sources. The paper should focus on the following
three major content criteria (See grading rubric):
1. Be sure to identify how specific theory and knowledge from each of the
following areas contributed to your ability to identify or solve the nursing
problem:
I.
Specific prior general education courses
II. Specific prior nursing courses
III. Your nursing background and experience
2. Consider the following questions as you justify the existence of the
identified problem at the setting:
I.
Why is this problem important to the site and to nursing?
II. How does this problem affect the staff/patients/clients at the
facility? (Or if in the past, how did this problem affect the
staff/patients in the previous facility?)
III. What is the current state of this problem in health care?
IV. Is it a problem in the country, globally, at other local organizations,
or specifically in this facility?
3. Make sure to discuss in detail your plan for searching for an evidencebased solution to the problem.
I.
Identify who you would need to contact or meet with to investigate
the problem further.
II. Discuss what your plans would be for interviewing or surveying the
staff, other departments, or other disciplines if you were actually in
charge of addressing this problem at a workplace/facility.
III. How do you plan to search the current literature for actual research
studies on the topic?
Assignment Requirements
The finished Assignment should be a 3–4 page expository essay, excluding the
title page and references. Longer papers will not be accepted for grading. The
nursing problem and the purpose of this Assignment should be clearly
established and sustained.
When planning, writing, and reviewing your work, you should:
•
•
•
•
•
be sure to read the Assignment description carefully (as displayed above);
consult the Grading Rubric (under the Course Home) to make sure you
have included the required content. Many students use the Grading Rubric
to outline their papers and help them assign a percentage of the paper’s
content to each required criteria;
follow the conventions of Standard American English (correct grammar,
punctuation, etc.);
utilize spelling and grammar check to minimize errors;
review APA formatting and citation information found in the KU Writing
Center, online, or elsewhere in the course, such as under the Course
Home Menu, Student Resources, and the APA Manual, 6th ed.
Your writing Assignment should:
•
•
•
•
•
be well ordered, logical, and unified, as well as original and insightful;
be written in third person;
remain objective; this is NOT an opinion paper (no editorializing);
utilize the APA Format, 6th ed. template provided for you by Kaplan to
help you maintain correct font, margins, and format; and
utilize the APA Manual, 6th ed. to help you display superior content,
organization, writing style, and writing mechanics.
