Eveline is vulnerable to her situation which makes her feel powerless in changing her life. Along with her submissive personality, Eveline is unable to leave her “hard life” due to problems she promised to care for. This causes Eveline to reevaluate her chance to leave and decides to fall into her pathetic old life being a servant to those in control of her.       The passage cited, “All the seas of the world tumbled about her heart. He was drawing her into them: he would drown her.” exemplifies how she feels out of control in her own life and unwilling to move forward. Therefore, the water imagery explains how Eveline is experiencing paralysis in which she is mentally paralyzed from her sailor calling to her. This leads to Eveline not being able to leave her old life for new opportunities because of her guilty conscience suggesting that she will be “drowned” spiritually if she disappoints on her family obligations.      Eveline’s guilt is far beyond her control which gives reason to her not leaving and continuing to be the victim of her abusive father and helpless brother. If she were to leave, she would continuously feel guilt towards breaking her promise with her mother and not being the protection her brother needs. Therefore, to act upon leaving would suffocate Eveline with guilt and distress, in which she would ultimately feel like she was being “drowned” by her choices.
