Explanation & Answer

Hi there, interesting question!

The first thing that comes to mind of Archie Bunker's plight is that his yearning of the past keeps his mind focused on the negative of the present, as a comparison of the "rosy" past often leaves one feeling dull about the present moment. Thus, from this point in his life onward, Archie cannot fully enjoy the present moment. Also, remembering the past as "the good old days" rather than simply "the old days" frames the memories he has of his past as only good ones. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is deceitful to himself. He has over-ridden his memories and forgotten any negative events that happened in the past. This is known in the field of Psychology as Rosy Retrospection. It keeps present memories looking bleak in comparison.

I hope this is a decent starting thought for a response to the question. I took a psychological approach to the question, but it is a subjective question with many answers.
