EVERYONE – IN-CLASS: The author suggests that there are two forces engaged around the issue of segregation: 1)” faith in the power of education to gradually subjugate ignorance and prejudice and create a more equal society” and 2) that many whites have “deep emotional interests in seeing blacks as inferior, and that these wishes resisted gaining realistic knowledge on which social reform [especially education] depended” (p. 222).
