MAT 101 HW
Question Description
Problem #1
Suppose you have three student loans:
- $10,000 with an APR of 8% for 15 years
- $15,000 with and APR of 8.5% for 20 years
- $12,500 with an APR of 9% for 10 years
- Calculate the monthly payment for each loan individually. How much do you pay total each month?
- Calculate the total you will pay over the life of the 3 loans
You have the opportunity to consolidate these 3 loans into a single loan with an APR of 8.5% and a term of 20 years. - What will be your monthly payment if you consolidate?
- How does the payment compare with what you are paying on the three loans individually? Does this result make sense to you?
- What will your total payment be over the life of the loan? What are the pros and cons of doing this consolidation?
Problem#2
The American Sugar Council reported a study on the relationship between children's sugar consumption and hyperactivity. For the study, they recruited 30 volunteer families and asked them to keep a food dairy for 30 days. At the end of the 30 days, parents were asked to complete a questionnaire detailing their perceptions of their children's energy and activity levels, specifically after consuming sugary treats. By comparing the energy and activity levels of children who consumed large amounts of sugary foods with those who did not, the Council concluded that there is no link between sugar consumption and hyperactivity. (This is a fictional example.)
- Do you believe the conclusions of this study? (Make sure to back up your conclusions with ideas from the reading, not just your personal experience or opinion.)
- What are the strengths and weaknesses of the study design?
- Who would you design a study differently to answer this question?
