1Envy is a desire to acquire something that another person possesses. 2People are envious when they wish they could have a house or car that a friend owns, a promotion that a coworker received, the kind of close relationships enjoyed by other couples, or anything else that they currently lack in their lives. 3Typically, this occurs in situations in which people we like or associate with have things or take actions that threaten our definition of ourselves. 4Someonewho defines himself or herself as successful might become envious if a coworker was given a larger raise, a close friend purchased a more expensive car, or a friend received a higher grade point average. 5On the other hand, jealousy is a fear of losing something to which we have become attached. 6We are jealous when we fear losing a dating partner or spouse to another person or when we feel excluded from the company of someone we like or love.
