Question description

Indochina did not turn toward democracy, Indochina was run by France and France benefited from it. They produced products for the French markets. Products were exported out of Indochina and imported into Indochina by the French.
The Philippines did turn towards democracy. U.S. officials wanted to strike a deal with the Philippines due to the embarrassment of the colonial war. William Taft allowed the Filipino elite to participate in administration at the local level while the U.S. governed at the national level. With U.S. rule, 50% of the population was literate and the health radically improved.
Indonesia/Dutch East Indies did not turn toward democracy. The educated men in Indonesia turned toward Sarekat Islam because they were frustrated with the Dutch authoritarianism. When Sarekat Islam ended, they turned to the Indonesian Nationalist Party. 
Siam or Thailand was modernizing and there were educational improvements, economic growth, and increased political sophistication which was dominated by the royal family that favored aristocrats. Pridi Phanomyung came up with a constitution that made the king a reigning monarch and not a ruling one. In the 1930’s, Thailand became nationalistic.
Burma turned toward Buddhism until 1937 and Burma was split off from India. There was no Nationalist movement in Malaya because the large ethnic groups living and they succeeded in a pluralist society.
