Due: Thursday, October 29th (by Midnight)

Length: 850 – 1000 words (please include a word count at the end of your assignment)

Format Requirements: All assignments should be double spaced and in 12 point font please! I expect that all assignments will be carefully and professionally prepared. The writing should be clean, correct, and should follow the rules of Standard English grammar. Excessive mistakes, grammatical errors, and misspellings are sufficient grounds for a significant reduction in the grade. Remember that it is important that you reach the length requirements!

Specific Requirements:

1.  Your essay should include at least two and no more than three properly formatted and integrated MLA format parenthetical citations taken from the two articles we have read for this assignment.

2.  Your essay should include a meaningful title

Readings:

“Every Nook and Cranny: The Dangerous Spread of Commercialized Culture” by Gary Ruskin and Juliet Schor (p. 487 in our textbook)

“What Isn’t for Sale” by Michael J. Sandel (p. 492 in our textbook)

Comparison: Finding Connections

As we discussed in class, for this assignment we will be using two articles devoted to different, yet related, topics. Utilizing a process of comparison – identifying similarities and differences – between the two articles, we will be attempting to locate and identify points of interest or insight that might form the basis for an essay length discussion.

Developing a Topic:

While the two essays that you have been assigned to read for this assignment provide a fairly narrow field in which to develop your topic, there are obviously a variety of specific topics or approaches that we might develop for our essay. To help in the initial process of analysis and topic development, there are a few tried and true approaches that we can utilize to get the ball rolling.

Cause, Operation, and Effect

Looking for key similarities and differences in terms of how phenomena such as commercialization and marketization have come to be, how they operate, and what effects they have can provide a simple means of narrowing your focus.

Specific Instructions:

The thesis and content of your essay should provide an answer to the following question:

Given your comparison of the information and themes presented in the two articles assigned for this essay, what insight can you provide concerning the joint phenomena of commercialization and marketization?
