Reynice Smith EGL1010-LD27 21 October 2015 MW 2:00- 3:15pm Professor Ogunsanwo Essay #1: Analysis Attack on the United States- September 11, 2001 On September 11, 2001, people all around the world were shocked and devastated after learning that there had been a terrorist attack on United States soil. That morning many Americans travel to work and school not knowing of the horror soon to come. Growing up so close to Washington D.C. a place where there are important leaders of our nation work and reside, I was able to have a first-hand account on the events that took place that day. Though I was only a child at the time I was very aware that because of these attacks life would not be the same. The attacks that occurred on September 11th 2001 cause major effects on the American people in regards to lifestyle, social prejudges, and international relations. One major way that American’s lifestyle changed is the amount of protection and security when traveling. When I was younger prior to September 11 I would take trips to Reagan National Airport to watch the plans take off for fun, After September 11 th that was no longer an option. The attack on the United States was a suicide mission in which armed Hijackers took control over 4 Airlines and crashed them into specific targets (twin towers & the pentagon) because of that it was made clear that security measures while traveling leave too much room for error. That caused for airport security to become much more secure. According to and ABC news article testimony airport security was effortless before 9/11 here is one quoted account from the article,” "I remember going down there (to the gate) during people's layovers and hanging out with them while they changed planes, I remember doing that and not even needing a ticket," said Katie Pointer, a passenger flying out of Sky Harbor.” As stated before that is what I remember as child pre-9/11 now you must have a ticket and you must remove your shoes while going through the security measures as well. People also started to develop social prejudges against many Muslim Americans. It was discovered that Osama Bin Laden the head of the Islamic extremist group Al-Queda was the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks. Due to his radical Islamic beliefs many American started to believe that all Muslims in America could possibly be a terrorist which lead to many acts of hate and fear toward these people. As stated in a Daily beast article written by Dean Obeidallah, “Once we learned that al Qaeda was responsible for the attack, I knew there would be a backlash against Muslim and Middle Eastern Americans. But what I could’ve never predicted was that, 13 years later, my fellow Americans would view Muslims far worse today than in the months after 9/11.” Even now still after 9/11 these views still carry on today. This could be compared to the views against Japanese Americans after the attack on Pearl Harbor Naval base in Hawaii. The group of extremist made it hard for people of Islamic faith in America because they became more susceptible and started doing hates crimes and discrimination in America. Not only did these attacks cause trouble domestically but also affected international relations abroad. After the attacks on 9/11 the United States declared a War on Terrorism that is still in affect today. The American people did not want another attack to occur again so the United States military sent troops into Afghanistan in order to fight against the radical Islamic group Al-Queda. Though The American military forces were able to take control of Taliban occupied land it still put us at odds with many countries in the Middle East. According to an article written by Richard Haass President of the Council on Foreign relations, “But progress is not to be confused with victory. Terrorists and terrorism cannot be eliminated any more than we can rid the world of disease. There will always be those who will resort to force against innocent men, women, and children in pursuit of political goals.” Though we may have executed Osama Bin Laden in recent years who was to blame for the attacks, think of the many lives lost on just that very base alone. Even now the State Department urges against travel to certain places in the Middle East because of the dislike of Americans being there due to the retaliation of the 9/11 attacks. Years later in 2015, we now have a September 11, Memorial Museum that honors all of the deceased victims of September 11 th. The Museum covers many stories of the tragedy, such as: covering the events of the September 11th September 11th and after September 11th. before When people go into the museum they will see that there are many parts of the building that is damaged. People will see the damaged vehicles that have surrounded the World Trade Center and pictures of destruction. People will also see people that were on the phone the moment of the attack, members of the rescue force and people will also hear recordings of the families memories on tape and so on. Therefore, the September 11th 2001 attack still remains vivid in the minds of many Americans and the world at large. The killing of more than two thousands people while injuring several others is a criminality of unthinkable order. It is worth noting that indeed no action that warrants the killing of innocent civilians, some of whom had very little knowledge about the demands of the Al Qaeda group that planned the attacks. However, the rescue efforts effectively showed the resilience of the world towards modern day terrorism. While it still remains a global challenge today, several governments have committed their skills and resources to root out this evil. What remains in the aftermath, is a painful memory; a lesson learned that would never be forgotten. The enemy of the people is always on the watch, which makes our security forces on alert and prepared to protect the citizens of the United States. In fact, at the same time as, many people will keep faith in their national intelligence for security reasons; the sad truth is that radicalization has been the in-thing in bringing up terrorism. It is no longer a foreign aspect but a result of bad ideologies and false teachings that continue to breed in our societies. Moral change therefore needs to be embraced in order to avert such happenings in the future.
