Explanation & Answer

Thank you for the opportunity to help you with your question!

Reading in earlier eras was considered a privilege to many.  During the 20th century, the people who knew how to read were those who came from upper class areas.  People who tilled the land only learned how to read based upon if they could get access to someone who was willing to teach them.  For example, during black slavery in the United States, keeping the slaves away from books and reading was a necessity.  The slave masters knew that if the slaves learned how to read they would start thinking and this intimidated the slave masters.  The masters wanted to keep the slave uneducated so that they would not find out that they had rights too, and that they were being treated unfair.  During this 21st century, most people know how to read and have access to devices, computers, phones, and tablets to read.  Books and magazines are also easily accessible to most people.  However, the problem nowadays is getting people to like reading.  There is no reading in secret during the present day, but getting people reading has become a different challenge.
