Description

A 32.5 g Iron rod, initially at 22.7 degree C, is submerged into an unknown mass of water at  63.2 degree C, in an insulated container. The final temperature of the mixture upon reaching thermal equilibrium is 59.5 degree C. What is the mass of the water?

Explanation & Answer

Thank you for the opportunity to help you with your question!

We have to find the unknown mass of water.

Given,

mass of iron=32.5 g

Specific heat of iron=.45J/g degree C

Change in temperature=>59.5-22.7=36.8 degree Celsius

mass of water=to calculate(Suppose it is m gram)

Specific heat of water=4.184 J/g degree C

Change in temperature=63.2-59.5 =3.7

Now heat gained by iron=mCdT

m=mass of iron,C=specific heat of iron=.45J/g degree C,dT=36.8

Now heat gained by iron is equal to heat lost by water.
