BUS 6073 Assignment #5
This assignment is worth 125 points. Please be prepared to print and submit the Word document
for this assignment at class #5 since you will be including drawings within your document. I
recommend you use the Assignment function in Blackboard to submit your Excel files.
Note: All of the data sets required to complete each question in this assignment are also located in
the Assignments folder.
1. (30 pts.) Please refer to the file titled, “20 Trash Bag Strength Case” located in the
Assignments folder.
2) (30 pts.) Please refer to the file titled, “21 Bank Customer Wait Time Case” located in the
Assignments folder.
3.
(30 pts.) Please refer to the file titled, “22 Disk Brake Case” located in the Assignments
folder.
4.
(35 pts.) Please refer to the file titled, “23 Stain Removal Case” located in the Assignments
folder.
Note 1: In each case I have included comments that are relevant to that specific case (contained
in the data worksheet). In addition, refer to the notes below which pertain to all cases.
Note 2: Please complete the 6-Step process we have used in class for our case analysis. As you
will see, I have inserted background information and additional notes related to each case within
the Excel worksheet.
Note 3: You will need to submit a Word document that contains all of your discussion points
for each case. I anticipate that your Word document will contain drawings depicting the
appropriate 1 or 2 tailed test for each problem. (I recommend leaving space for each drawing
within your discussion so that you can insert the drawings after printing out the document). I
also recommend that you include each Step in the process as a Section header within your
document. This will help to organize your discussion and it will make your paper easier to
grade. For example:
Step 1: Discuss all of the issues and pertinent information that you (as the analyst)
must provide before moving on to Step 2.
Step 2: As above, discuss all of the issues and pertinent information that is relevant in
this section. Repeat this procedure for all 6 steps.
Note 4: Be sure to include your rational for selecting the CL you will use in each problem.
That is, why do you think it is appropriate?
Note 5: In addition, you will need to submit one or more Excel files to your Assignment
Folder. The Excel files should include the worksheets that contain your statistical output from
your MegaStat analysis of each of the 4 problems.
Thanks and be blessed,
Dr. B

The CEO of Durable Bags Inc. is planning to introduce a new, improved version of the
company's trash bag. The new trash bag utilizes a new formula that is being
touted as the strongest bag on the market.
Previously, one of Durable Bags' competitors was advertising that their bags could
hold up to 50 lbs. of trash without breaking.
The CEO of Durable Bags has contacted you and asked you to design a research
study that proves that the new Durable Bag is the strongest on the market.
Proceed through the 6 step process we discussed in class.
Provide details on what must be accomplished in each of the 6 steps.
Notes:
Of course, the sample has been selected (data on the left).
Let me assure you that the sampling design is completely valid.
The data collected is based on a test where random bags were selected and
filled with weight until the bag tore. The recorded weight is in pounds.
Be sure to support each decision you make with appropriate rationale.
Make sure you put your name on all submissions
Please make sure you pay attention to the margins in Excel.
Be sure to submit all of your discussion notes in a Word document.
Be sure to include appropriate drawings in your analysis (Word doc).

A branch manager of Wonderful Bank devised a new process designed to
reduce customer wait times. The branch manager received permission
from the bank president to test her new process against the old process.
The branch manager contacted you to set up a test. She would like the test to
be set up to see if the wait times for the two processes are different.
Once Steps 1 through 5 were completed, two samples were taken.
In one sample, data were collected on wait times using the old process.
In the second sample, data were collected on wait times using the new process.
As always, use the 6 step process we discussed in class.
Provide details on what must be accomplished in each of the 6 steps.
Notes:
Observations for each of the two samples have been collected (data on the left).
Let me assure you that the sampling design is completely valid.
The data collected is based on the total wait time once a customer enters the cue.
The wait

is independent of the other.
Be sure to support each decision you make with appropriate rationale.
Be sure to include appropriate drawings in your analysis.
Make sure you put your name on all submissions
Please see the assignment sheet for further instructions. Please try to be
consistent in your approach from one case to the next.
For example, try to be consistent with how you arrange your comments in the
Word document and Excel worksheets that you submit for each case.
Please use the same section heading in each case analysis (i.e., Step 1, Step 2, etc.)
Final Note:
If the average wait time for the new process is found to be less than the
average wait time for the old process, do you think that the difference
is large enough to make a difference to the bank president?
Keep in mind that installing the new process would cause disruption, require
additional training, and perhaps an upgrade in equipment.

An engineering company has designed a new brake system that is being installed
on the ZX-900 sports car.
The VP of Marketing wants to be able to promote the new brake system as the best
in the industry. A competitor has been advertising that their brakes have the shortest
stopping distance of any brakes in the industry.
An industry sponsored test verified that the competitor's braking system was the best.
The test recorded an average stopping distance of 60 feet under controlled conditions.
The VP of Marketing for the engineering company has hired you to run exactly the same
test to determine if the new braking system is better than their competitor's system.
Your test design was verified by the industry association so the results should be credible.
The data in Column B were collected from the test using randomly selected ZX-900 sports cars.
In addition to the 6 step process, I recommend that you run descriptive statistics .
to determine if any of the data points require further discussion.
Hint: you might want to run a box plot and a runs test to see if you can find anything of
interest. In addition, you might want to run a Confidence Interval to see what that tells you.
Notes:
Be sure to support each decision you make with appropriate rationale.
Be sure to include appropriate drawings in your analysis.
Make sure you put your name on all submissions
Please see the assignment sheet for further instructions. Please try to be

Please use the same section heading in each case analysis (i.e., Step 1, Step 2, etc.)
Final Note:
Even if the average braking distance for the new brake system is less than 60 feet,
are there any issues that you should report to the VP of Marketing or even
to the VP of Engineering?

Two laundry detergent brands (Brands A & B) are both claiming that their brand
does the best job of taking out stains. Unfortunately, they used two different
tests to prove their claim. They hired an independent lab to test both brands.
The lab technician contacted you to draw two samples. A number of different stains
were applied to a variety of different materials. Each stain area is divided in half
and each detergent is applied to a separte part of the stain. Both stain areas of
each material were carefully cleaned. After cleaning, the stain was examined
with a scientific instrument and a score was obtained for each brand of detergent.
The lower the score, the more effect the job of removing the stain. A higher score
indicates a less effective job.
Keep in mind that these are paired scores since
both brands were used on each piece of clothing.
The stain scores for each piece of clothing are provided on the left (1 thru 35).
As always, use the 6 step process we discussed in class.
Provide details on what must be accomplished in each of the 6 steps.
Notes:
Be sure to support each decision you make with appropriate rationale.
Be sure to include appropriate drawings in your analysis.
Make sure you put your name on all submissions
Please see the assignment sheet for further instructions. Please try to be
consistent in your approach from one case to the next.
For example, try to be consistent with how you arrange your comments in the
Word document and Excel worksheets that you submit for each case.
Please use the same section heading in each case analysis (i.e., Step 1, Step 2, etc.)
Final Note:
Is the difference in the Stain Scores between the two brands large enough to actually
make a difference?
How would you put the answer to this question into perspective if you were trying
to explain the results of this test to one of the managers from either company?
*
