ENGL 102.002 21 November 2014 No Longer Restrained from Male Dominance: A New Beginning for a Lifetime of Silence in Alice Walker's The Color Purple Through minor explorations of escape, Walker's protagonist in The Color Purple is able to reach a minimum level of liberation throughout the novel. Being silenced in every form of communication with another being, Celie, Walker's protagonist, is prohibited from interaction by male figures for the entirety of her teenage and majority of her early-adult life. Only with rescue of her relationship with Shug Avery, Celie is capable of overcoming the depression that dawn upon her for so many years. Over the course of several years, she encounters abuse, disrespect, and entrapment from her stepfather, stepchildren, and husband. Finding liberation can be hazardous for anyone's life that is being threatened and forced to remain in a figurative jail cell all their life, and because it is a process Celie requires support in order to obtain this goal. Through examination of Alice Walker's The Color Purple one finds that Celie becomes an empowered, self-loving young lady by casting away all the negative rulers of her life and embarking a truly joyous life with women that loves and cherishes her. Celie ultimately achieves true liberation through the reconnection with her sister, Nettie, and the newly found relationship she shares with Shug Avery.
