next steps a scientist would take, reflect back on these examples. This reflection is the final piece of your planning document, and you will use it to develop your
presentation in Module 8.

varying socioeconomic statuses. Using technology, these crimes also are able to
occur on a much larger scale than ever before. Despite the dangers of
white-collar crimes, they are not included in the FBI’s annual Uniform Crime
Reports.

based on the presumption that most perpetrators who commit these crimes were of
middle- to upper-class socioeconomic status. White-collar crimes include
embezzlement, fraud, identity theft, espionage, and money laundering. In the
past, these crimes did not garner a lot of attention from the media and the
public. The crimes that received the most attention were index crimes. Index
crimes include willful homicide, forcible rape, robbery, burglary, aggravated
assault, larceny over $50, motor vehicle theft, and arson. Data related to
index crimes is gathered annually by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
and made public via the FBI’s annual Uniform Crime Reports.
While white-collar crimes had not
received a lot of attention in the past, advances in technologies have
increased opportunities to commit these types of crimes by individuals of
varying socioeconomic statuses. Using technology, these crimes also are able to
occur on a much larger scale than ever before. Despite the dangers of
white-collar crimes, they are not included in the FBI’s annual Uniform Crime
Reports.
