Description
Two mechanics worked on a car. The 1st mechanic charged $115 ph, and the 2nd mechanic charged $120 ph
The mechanics worked for a combined total of 25 hours, and together they charged a total of $2950. How
long did each mechanic work?
Explanation & Answer
Thank you for the opportunity to help you with your question!
Let x = # of hours the 1st mechanic worked (charges $115/hour)
Let y = # of hours of 2nd mechanic worked (charges $120/hour)
We know x + y = 25
115x + 120y = 2950
Solve the system.
y = 25 - x
115x + 120(25 - x) = 2950
115x + 3000 - 120x = 2950
-5x + 3000 = 2950
-5x = -50
x=10
y = 25 - x = 25 - 10 = 15
Therefore the 1st mechanic worked 10 hours, the 2nd mechanic worked 15 hours.
