Source Selection and Research Tools

Module 2_ Interactive Lecture _ Schoology.pdf

The information discussed in this module gives you a skeletal structure to think about how information is created and disseminated.  Now it is time to think beyond the information presented here and speculate on what kinds of implications the existing structure creates.

Published information, no matter what format it is in, relies on someone to create content and someone (sometimes someone else) to disseminate the content. Keep in mind, information is actively constructed, often in accordance with the interests of intellectual, commercial, and ruling political or social contexts.

Part 1: Choose one research tool or information format below and respond to the corresponding prompts:

  • Free or “visible” web resources: What complications might there be with using instantly updatable forums of communication for research?  What types of people are represented on the web, and whose voices might be either diminished or left out?
  • Nonfiction books or peer-reviewed articles: What are potential complications with scholarly research? How might this type of publication be influenced by outside entities, trends in the field, and so on? What types of people are represented in scholarly literature, and whose voices might be either diminished or left out?
  • Newspapers: What are potential complications with using newspaper articles for research? Is this complicated by the web? What types of people are represented in newspapers, and whose voices might be either diminished or left out?

Part 2: Research one of the two topics below.

  • Your boss asks you to determine if a new content management system (this can be an IT system in your major field or relate to a work experience you’ve had) is worth implementing at your place of employment.
  • Your instructor has given an assignment that asks you to conduct a literature review on genetically modified foods. You must present both sides of the argument.

Part 3: Identify which topic you are researching and respond to the following prompts:

  • Identify the different types of sources that might contribute to research surrounding your topic.
  • Name at least three potential research tools (kind of website, library database, or other resource) available to you to actually conduct the research.
  • Evaluate some of the advantages and complications associated with each of the research tools.

Your paper should be 2-3 pages in length with document and citation formatting per the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA Requirements.
