Interview Analysis

Please use the interview information attached here - Week 3 - Interview.docx

Based on your interview notes from this week’s discussion activity, analyze the epidemiological data surrounding the health issue that your agency addresses. Compare the epidemiological data with the information provided by the agency director/representative by addressing the following points:

  • How do the epidemiological data and the information provided by the agency director/representative differ?  How are they similar?
  • Based on the epidemiological information collected, what is the true effect that the agency is having on your community?
  • Appraise the various methods that should be employed to help the agency improve its effectiveness.
  • Analyze the 10 Essential Services of Public Health and how they are (or are not) wrapped into the service provided by this agency.

Epidemiological data consists of statistical information on your population obtained through primary sources, which are typically research studies or government survey information (such as those provided by the CDC or health department).  Utilize the Ashford University Library and/or government websites to locate statistics that relate to your organization.  For example, if you interviewed someone from an organization that focused on childhood obesity, you would locate research studies that provided statistical results for your county, region, or state to illustrate what was actually occurring in your area regarding childhood obesity.  Once you have this data, compare it with the information provided by the agency director or representative that you interviewed.  In some cases, you may only be able to find actual state statistics, but your organization may have provided only local data.  This is okay; just make sure you note this in your paper and through critical thinking, infer how this might influence the effectiveness of your organization’s work.

Your paper should be three to four pages in length, excluding the title and reference pages, and formatted according to APA style guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center. Visit the Ashford University Library to locate a minimum of two scholarly sources that support your main ideas. Also, use surveillance information that was discussed as part of the epidemiology process.

The Elderly – Personal Interview The population that I have chosen for this discussion is the elderly. According to our text, “information on morbidity includes the prevalence of the major chronic illnesses such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.” (Friis, 2013). I feel that the critical health issues affecting the elderly are falls, Alzheimer’s and Dementia, and poor overall health as well. According to one source, “Thirty percent of care costs for community-dwelling individuals with dementia are directly attributable to the management of behavioral symptoms.” (Kales, 2015). The three public health/community services that exist in my community are Senior Care Services, LOA Area Agency on Aging, and Alleghany County Senior Service. All of these services concentrate on the elderly and how best to assist them. I chose to contact the Senior Care Service in my area and was able to speak with Lisa Matheny, RN with Case management. This service is housed in the community hospital as an acute care center for mental impairments such as dementia with and without behavioral issues and depression. They have Psychiatrists on staff, as well as trained nurses that are educated in providing care for mental instabilities. Their mission is “Above All else we are committed to the care and improvement of Human life” In speaking with Lisa, she feels that their service assists the overall public health arena is meeting a need of the community. Their service has even helped patients throughout the state of Virginia and continues. There are some barriers and those are mainly the placement of dementia patients with behavioral issues. At times they receive the patients from the regions nursing facilities and when the patient is cleared for discharge the nursing facilities will not take them back due to the behavioral issues due to feeling they do not have the expertise in handling these issues. This causes a long length of stay for the facility which hinders them from accepting new admissions as well as hardship for the patients and families emotionally. Lisa said that they have met with the Delegates within the State of Virginia and Washington to voice their concerns in regards to the hardship of finding a placement for the patients. She stated, “Our goal is to safely place the patient in a facility that can provide appropriate care while ethically monitoring that the patient’s rights are within the governmental guidelines.” She felt that meeting with the Delegates with their issues could assist in additional laws and guidelines for the nursing facilities to ensure their expertise. The Senior Care service is funded by reimbursements and de-escalating per diem. Since they are located within the hospital as a distinct unit, they are able to bill the patient’s insurance, which in return they get the appropriate authorizations prior to and during admissions. When I asked Lisa what concerns that she felt was still unmet, she felt that the placement issues will continue to be the problem, especially those who have dementia with associated behavioral issues. This service has a passion for the needs of the elderly and work hard to place them in the best situation. References: Friis, Robert H. (2013). Community & Public Health.
