Hey I am having trouble figuring out this topic: adding and subtracting rational expressions

I have my math text book with the explanations in front of me but because I have been missing class due to medical reasons during the introduction of this unit, I have been unable to figure this out on my own. I have no notes to work off of currently and I have literally spent over an hour looking this topic up on the internet for examples and lessons on this and I am still very confused. I took a picture of the problems in the book and my attempts to figure it out on my own. I realized that the book is failing to explain through its "examples" how to approach multiple types of problems. In order for me to understand something, I need to see some example problems first with a step by step tutorial on how they formed the solution. Then I need to try some on my own before actually being able to go about solving these problems and understand what I am doing. Here is what I have:
