Question description

NOTE: you are not allowed to write about same-sex marriage or abortion for this paper

Begin researching your topic by looking online, in the Hondros Online Library, in any other libraries that you have access too, and by talking to expert sources of information. As you begin your research, look at any relevant information, but stay engaged with your topic by looking for the answers to your research question. Remember that this assignment is designed to help you as you begin to write your paper. The more effort you put into finding good sources and making effective notes, the easier it will be to write your draft. Try to look for resources that help you answer the research question you posed in the Research Paper Proposal Discussion Forum.

As you research, compile a list of high quality sources related to your topic.

  • High quality sources are reputable and scholarly. At least half of your sources should come from publications, like journals, reports, essays, and books. Though many of these can be found online, these are distinctly different from personal web pages and personal blogs. Reputable online sources and publications should be affiliated with well-known and reputable organizations or well-established institutions (sites that end with .edu or .gov are often considered more credible, but you should examine each source on a case by case basis).
  • Make sure that your sources are relevant to your argument. Consider how the sources you use will make you more or less credible. Use strong references that are relevant to your discussion to build your credibility as a writer.
  • Do not search only for sources to support an argument that you want to make. Instead, search for sources that might answer your question in whole or in part, regardless of their point of view. You can always omit sources that you distrust, or better yet, reference them within your paper and then argue against them.

Collect at least six sources that you will likely use as references in your research paper and use them to draft an Annotated Bibliography. Essentially, an annotated bibliography looks like an APA references page, but with a short summary of the argument and main points of each source. In other words, write at least six APA references for sources relevant to your argument, and underneath each one, write (in your own words) that source’s thesis, its main points, and how you think the source will be relevant to your paper.

Below, you’ll find an example annotation taken from the Purdue Online Writing Lab website. Remember that you must complete a reference an annotation for all six sources.

Ehrenreich, B. (2001). Nickel and dimed: On (not) getting by in America. New York: Henry Holt and Company.

Ehrenreich attempts to ascertain whether it is currently possible for an individual to live on a minimum-wage in America. Taking jobs as a waitress, a maid in a cleaning service, and a Wal-Mart sales employee, the author summarizes and reflects on her work, her relationships with fellow workers, and her financial struggles in each situation.  Ehrenreich is aware of the limitations of her experiment and the ethical implications of her experiential research tactics and reflects on these issues in the text. The author is forthcoming about her methods and supplements her experiences with scholarly research on her places of employment, the economy, and the rising cost of living in America.

This assignment is worth 20 points. Your annotations will be graded out of 12 points (2 points for each annotation); your APA references will be graded out of 8 points.
