Problem 2. CSTR with a Heater An exothermic reaction, A→ B, shows half-order kinetics, r = kCAC5, with a linear temperature dependence, k = a + BT. a) Write down the non-steady state material and energy balances for a CSTR that has an electric heater. The inlet temperature and concentration to the reactor are T, and CAo; the volumetric flow rate is Q; and the reactor volume is V. The electric heater adds a constant power, P, to the reactor that is independent of the fluid temperature. Define any other parameters you need. b) Write down the equations that need to be solved to determine the steady-state solutions (e.g. If there are 3 equations that need to be solved to determine three unknowns, make it clear what the equations and unknowns are.) c) Assuming that you have calculated the steady-state solutions, determine the criteria that would need to be met for a steady-state solution to be stable.
