A Current Affair is considered to be an event of political or social interest and an important happening in the world at the present time. 1. Choose a video that is up to 2 minutes in length. You may choose a portion of a video by identifying the timeframe you are analyzing. The clip should be within the last 90 Days 2. Create a PowerPoint I must be able to see you in the video clip you are analyzing Include the Points you are analyzing 3. Record a video of you Presenting the content and analysis Do no read the PowerPoint. This is like giving a speech in class. Imagine showing the class the clip you are analyzing and using the PP to supplement your speech. You are videotaping the speech instead of giving a live speech The video of you presenting, should be around 5 minutes. This is in addition to the 2 minute clip. 4. The entire assignment should be a approximately 7 minutes. Clip (2 minutes)+ Presentation (5 minutes)=7 minutes 5. Address the following in your video Clearly identify the argument. Present the premises and conclusion in your chosen article or video clip and explain their importance. Did the speakers/writers use deductive or inductive reasoning? Identify three of the following: vague/ambiguous language; credibility; cognitive bias; rhetoric; logical fallacies; generalizations; arguments from analogy; cause and effect reasoning; and value judgments about morality, law, or aesthetics. Explain why you think the argument fits this concept. Also, identify if this was purposeful and why, and how this affects the strength of the argument. Provide a conclusion to your video. Was the argument convincing? What is your position? For this video, choose one item that addresses a current issue and makes connections to class concepts. The item may be print or video—for example, an article from the current edition of a newspaper or magazine, a segment from a news or talk show, a YouTube video, vlog, or any program that features current affairs. Your item (up to 2 minutes) will be embedded in a PowerPoint that you will use to supplement your presentation. You may use clips of a video, pause a video as necessary to identify concepts, or use a clip for a full 2 minutes. However, you cannot use over two minutes of video in your own presentation. Items cannot be more than 90 days old. Clips and articles can be embedded in a PowerPoint that you will use to supplement your presentation or you can share your screen and show these separately during your presentation. Remember, your PowerPoint is there to guide you during your presentation. Do not overload this with text. Submit a 4-5 minute video in which you: Use any software you are comfortable with, including Panopto, in order to record yourself speaking and presenting a PowerPoint at the same time. You and your PowerPoint must be visible during the entirety of the presentation. This cannot just be a recording of your face presenting and it cannot just be a voice over with your PowerPoint – Video and screen option should be selected on any media you use. (2) Describe to the discussant how socialization also influences our perceptions of the self. “I believe during early childhood, socialization occurs at the smallest of levels, and assimilates children to the foundation of life. As young children, we learn how to act, feel, speak, and think. George Herbert Mead's theory on the three stages of "I-me" self best represent the stages of socialization throughout childhood. We imitate (imitate those around us), play (play the roles of other people), and eventually participate in the game (leads into adolosence; we begin to understand others). As children, our largest agent of socialization is our family. We spend most of our time during Mead's three stages with our family because we are too young to understand other agents of socialization. During adolesence is when we begin to play the game; we begin to understand other people's opinions, views, and environments. Adoloscents to young adults start to understand how the world around them operates, the socioeconomic status of family and peers, and formulate their own socioeconomic status. The most influencing agent of socialization in this stage of life is education, as education levels rise, our perception of these factors becomes clearer and gives people more free will on what they choose to do with their lives (for example: one child who participates in grades K-12 is more likely to create their own socioeconomic footprint in society, whereas a child who has little to no education will more than likely take after their childhood agent aka the family). The final stage of life - adulthood - we have achieved our status in society, and we begin to particpate in norms that would likely aid our societal status. Politics, religion, occupational status, economic status, etc. are all perceptions that adults begin to strongly participate in. Peer groups, mass media, and religous institutions are the largest agents of socialization in this stage; as people begin to make choices for themselves, these outlets allow people to conjugate together and agree or disagree with particular issues that pertain to their own societal status.”
