Question Description

1. Layout the framing for the roof and mezzanine areas. Show joists (including spacing), girders, beams,

columns and other structural members as you may design. Also dimension column grids and beam/girder

locations. Note this should be consistent with your dimensions and location. This will be graded on

correctness, logically placing members and economical solutions. 50 points

2. Using the wood grade specified above, design three unique wood roof joists, including an exterior patio

joist, with a maximum depth of 13.25”. 10 points

3. Using the wood grade specified above, design one unique mezzanine floor joist. 10 points

4. Using glulam material (Fv 225, Fb 2400, E2.4M all in psi), design the longest roof beam and the longest

mezzanine floor beam. 10 points

5. Using the wood grade specified above, design the two heaviest loaded columns. 10 points

6. For the exposed roof truss shown, determine the forces in the truss for three bays from each end.

ATE361 – Fall 2015 – Project For Those Not in Studio For the attached plans – roof, mezzanine and floor plans – the dimensions A, B, C and D are as described below: Your Last Name Starts With Dim A Dim B Dim C Dim D Location – Roof Snow Load Wood Grade A to F 12’-0” 68’-0” 16’-0” 76’-0” Phoenix – 20 psf Sel Str G to L 16’-0” 60’-0” 18’-0” 84’-0” Flagstaff – 80 psf DF1 M to S 18’-0” 54’-0” 16’-0” 88’-0” Dallas – 40 psf DF2 R to Z 20’-0” 48’-0” 18’-0” 96’-0” Atlanta – 30 psf Sel Str Note: See attached pages for material weights and wood values The roof is comprised of standard 2x wood joists (not rough sawn), with ½” plywood sheathing, 5 ply roofing, insulation, ducts, gpy board cieling and sprinkler system. The mezzanine office floor is comprised of 4x (not rough sawn), ¾” plywood, carpet, gyp. board ceiling and a sprinkler system on the under side. The exeterior patio roof is comprised of metal deck screwed to 4x rough sawn framing at a spacing to match the exposed wood truss.
