Using a narrow-band laser, which is on resonance with an optical transition in the sodium atom, you shine a light beam through a volume filled with sodium vapour. The idea is to find out how dense the vapour is. The light intensity at the laser source is0.1 mW/cm, far below the saturation intensity of this transition. 10 cm away from the source of the light, the intensity has dropped to0.095 mW/cm. The absorption cross sectionσ of the light is 0.1656μm. What is the density of the vapour (in units of particles per m)?
