The Government of the america, the federal government, has three branches: the executive power, invested in the President, the legislative power, given to Congress, and the judicial power, vested in one Supreme Court and other federal courts created by Congress. The Constitution gives a system of checks and balances aiming  to avoid the dominion  of any one branch.

the very important actions demand the participation of not less than a single branch of government. For example, Congress will pass the  laws, whereas the President can veto them. The executive branch prosecutes suspects for criminal violations, but they have  be tried by the courts. The President appoints federal judges, but their appointment must be confirmed by the Senate.
