in this situation it is easy to lose the job if the leutenat gets to know that you had approched his supervisor.again there is a possible promotion if the supervisor gets to investigate the case and gets to know that it was true indeed that there was a cover up being done by the leutenant ,this could be a way of rewarding you for te good job.
