The opening sequence of the movie shows a mixture of colors with lots of lighting and motion. This helps create a sense of confusion as well a alienation, which is what Harris was feeling as he looks at the flashing lights that are in a foreign language.
There are two images of Charlotte sitting in front of a cityscrape; these are examples of rack focus. The first image has the foreground out of focus and the background lights in focus. The second image has the focus on the foreground and the background out of focus. This helps in illustrating the feeling of alienation that Charlotte has from her surroundings.
The scene from the hotel's pool makes use of mise-en-scene (lines and composition) to draw the viewer's attention to the lonely figure that is Charlotte. The blue color helps emphasize her feelings of depression and loneliness.
In the taxi, the city lighting is used to set the tone once more. Charlotte looks out of the taxi window. The camera is placed so that it captures the reflections of the building as well as her face. The viewer then is able to see Charlotte's wonder and what it is that she is looking at.
The use of natural light when Charlotte walks across the pond gives a beautiful sequence. The natural light gives the scene a more realistic look.
