What is the dilemma that each organization is facing?
The dilemma facing the organizations is whether bribery is justified when the situation at hand merit such an action. The world of business today is marred by instances of bribery s the norm of the practice; therefore, the organizations are struggling with the thought of conforming to the norm or current practice of accepting and awarding bribes to get favors in business and government. The organization is in environments prone to instances of bribery. For instance, the organization in India is located in an environment where low-level bribery is tolerated. It is a major dilemma for the businesses whether to uphold the required ethical standards and conform to the legal requirements of the land or take the easy route that is the bribe way (Kehe & Kehe, 2014).
Explore whether bribery is right or wrong, and discuss using ethical relativism principles.
Ethical relativism refers to the theory or hypothesis that postulates that ethical standards or morality are relative based on the society in question, this implies that certain societies may tolerate certain habits while others might consider the same obscene.
Cultural relativism: culture influences the perception of different people towards bribery. Most cultures are of the thought that bribery is wrong, but some may condone it (Zultanski & Ugly Duckling Presse, 2014).
Descriptive ethical relativism: The mere fact that certain societies or cultures condone bribery while others are strictly against the vice points to the fact that in different cultures the variant is their sense of morality.
Normative ethical relativism: This theory is to the effect that there is no universally valid moral principle. In the same breadth, bribery is not universally a vice or virtue.
Identify the cultural differences in bribery practices.
Different cultures have different perceptions of bribery. Tipping may be considered a bribe in certain cultures but the same is highly practiced and accepted America and European nations
In the American society and culture it is against the law to give a public officer and award or gift for performing a task that they are mandated to perform with regarding to their duties as spelled out by the government. Such a habit or practice is regarded as bribery and is punishable by law. In contrast, in the Arab countries or cultures the concept of baksheesh may be construed to be bribery especially when a faqir asks for baksheesh and is socially acceptable (Zultanski & Ugly Duckling Presse, 2014).
Cultural difference concerning how different people perceive bribery may also be concerning the contributions made by individuals or institutions to political parties. Most cultures like the American culture are of the view that contributions from party stakeholders and other concerned persons are necessary for the running of the party and the subsequent winning of the elections. In contrast, some nations and cultures consider this a crime both immoral and illegal.
Another example of a cultural difference with regard to how people perceive bribe is the fact that certain communist nations particularly those that formed part of the eastern bloc tolerated bribes given to doctors for medical care, such a practices cannot not be condoned in the American society (Kehe & Kehe, 2014).
