INFS 3250 – Software Applications in Business Spring Semester, 2015 - Section 001 Course/Syllabus Disclaimer: This syllabus is a pre-semester plan. It is subject to change – at any time, at my discretion. It is the student’s responsibility to monitor the course for any changes. That is best accomplished via class attendance and frequent visits to the course blackboard site. Objectives: The business work place is heavily dependent on computers for data analysis and decision-making. We are now in the age of office automation. It is important for any professional to be familiar with and capable of using productivity tools such as Spreadsheet and Database software to solve problems. In this course, the student will be exposed to advanced features of two widely used programs: Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have mastered concepts in: • • • • • Spreadsheet usage for common business problems Advanced spreadsheet topics: VLOOKUP, IF, Pivot & Data Tables, Macros Basic Understanding of Database terminology Creating tables, queries, forms and reports in Access Integrating Microsoft tools: Word, Excel & Access Course policies and procedures: 1. Class attendance is strongly encouraged. 2. No makeup exams will be given without prior approval and negotiated alternate arrangements. Exceptions to this will be made only in strict accordance with UT policies. 3. Please be advised that no form of academic dishonesty will be tolerated in this class. All of the following offenses represent academic dishonesty: taking answers from or comparing answers with another student during an exam, using any unauthorized aids during an exam, sharing your computer assignment with another student, allowing another student to share his/her computer assignment with you, or working with another student(s) on a computer assignment. In every incident of dishonesty, full university and college policies on academic dishonesty will be applied. NO EXCEPTIONS. This could result in a letter to your permanent file, immediate dismissal from the course with a grade of ‘F’, or even stronger action. Student Behavior in This Course As a student taking coursework in this College, you have an obligation to maintain the highest standards of ethical conduct. This involves avoiding acts of academic dishonesty. The reason for requiring the highest standards of ethical conduct is to ensure fairness, honesty and integrity in the evaluation of student performance. Evaluation of student performance should not be invalidated by students intending or attempting to misrepresent the skill, achievement or ability of either themselves or others. To achieve this purpose, the College has enacted a Code of Student Academic Conduct. This Code sets forth specific types of academic misconduct which will not be tolerated. If there is any evidence of any of these types of academic misconduct in this course, charges will be filed against the student or students involved. Along with the Code, the College has also enacted a Student Academic Grievance Procedure. Course Evaluation Course Weights Homework Excel Exam Access Exam Case Project ASM Meetings 40% 25% 25% 10% Extra Credit Final Grading Scale >= 92% A >=90% A>=87% B+ >=80% B >=77% C+ >=70% C >=67% D+ >=60% D < 60% F Homework Assignments – Assignments will be given that must be completed outside of class. Learning new software requires time and practice! Assignments will be accepted late up until the day of the exam, but will receive a 10% deduction for each class period late. Exception: No assignments will be accepted or points awarded for work submitted after the related exam. This also pertains to assignments not properly submitted. See the Blackboard note regarding assignment posting requirements. Excel Exam – This exam will test the student’s ability to effectively use the Microsoft Excel software program. It will cover material identified in the syllabus plus any additional topics covered in the lecture. No make-up exams will be given! Access Exam – The Access exam will test the student’s ability to effectively use the Microsoft Access software program. It will cover material identified in the syllabus plus any additional topics covered in the lecture. No make-up exams will be given! Case Project – A capstone project will be assigned that will allow the student to demonstrate the application of the semester’s material to a real business problem. This project will be due: Friday, May 6, by 11:00 am Due to the nature of the class – a student who fails to score > 60% on BOTH exams (Excel and Access) will not receive a passing grade in the course.
