Question description

A buffer was prepared that contained 0.50 M CH3COOH (acetic acid; pKa = 4.74) and 0.50 M CH3COONa (sodium acetate). Determine the pH of this buffer after adding 0.020 mol of solid NaOH to 1.0 L of the buffer. Make comment about buffer capacity if the initial concentrations of conjugate acid-base pair were higher. Explain why?

Sodium acetate (CH3COONa, or NaAc for this problem) has applications in photographic development and textile dyeing. What is the pH of 0.25 M NaAc? Ka of acetic acid (HAc) is 1.8x10-5.
