Note: Prior to lab, determine the following:
-amount of styrene, in microliters____
-amount of dichloromethane added to styrene, in mL
-amount of triethylamine
To an appropriately sized reaction vessel, add 0.002 mol styrene followed by enough dichloromethane to make a 2.0 M solution.
-add a stir flea, cool the reaction mixture in an ice-water bath, and begin stirring the mixture.
-to this mixture syringe in 8.5 mol% triethylamine. The triethylamine will be available as a 0.43M solution in dichloromethane.
-next add 5 ml 10% NaOCl solution to the cool, stirring mixture.
-Prepare a solution of 196 mg of Mystery Reagent X solution. Rinse the pipette with several extra drops of dichloromethane to ensure complete transfer of this reagent.-TLC to monitor the reactoin
when reaction appears to be complete, transfer the organic layer to a clean vessel. extract the remaining aqueous layer with an equal volume of dichloromethane and dry the combine layers with anhydrous sodium sulfate.
