Question description

  1.  Compare Nietzsche’s so-called dualism with the dualism implicit in the works of Descartes and Plato (NB: Be sure to lay out what each kind of dualism is while making your comparison). What might Nietzsche have said about the view of morality expressed in the Ring of Gyges story from book 2 of Plato’s Republic, i.e., from which human condition does it emanate (Hint: see aphorism #370 in Nietzsche’s Gay Science)?  What was the foundation of Nietzsche’s critique of Platonic dualism?  Given his distaste for the kind of dualism that Plato’s work implied, what might Nietzsche have to say about Descartes’ brand of dualism?  Describe the two types of nihilism we discussed in class and then consider whether Nietzsche might be categorized under either of these classifications.  Was Nietzsche a nihilist or something else?  Select your favorite citation from Nietzsche that relates to his so-called dualism and explain why it is your favorite and how it may be understood as part of his critique of western philosophy?
