A hypothesis is known as an educated guess/statement that can be either accepted or rejected with observations and/or experiments. Hypotheses help researchers make predictions and analyze what kind of research they want to do or will be studying. Similarly, a null hypothesis is a hypothesis with no relation or no difference. When a researcher is faced with a null hypothesis, they are either trying to disprove or refute it to show there is no association or difference. When researchers are deal with null hypotheses, they also come across type I and type II errors. Both kinds of errors help identify whether or not to accept or reject the null hypothesis given. Type I errors are when investigators falsely reject the null hypothesis, being that the hypothesis is actually true shown with no relationship. A type II error is when the null hypothesis is false, and there is a real relationship between the variables. In the following null hypothesis example: “The amount of emergency department visits is not related to the amount of stress an individual has.” Type I Error: A person can go to the emergency department for stress, when there are no stress symptoms actually present.
